Do friendlies only impact player progression?

I'm wondering if anyone knows what friendly matches impact? I know they don't impact player condition/fatigue and that they do impact player progression. I am not sure however on whether friendly matches accurately reflected how good your tactics are? (generally, I know obviously there are loads of variables that go into a result)
So far I've played 5 league games on my new save with Roma (objective 4th), and won 1, lost 1 and drew 3, whereas in the 3 friendlies I've played, 2 I did and one another player did against me, I won all 3, the 2 I set up very convincingly. I was just unsure if a friendly could be a good way of testing a tactic and tactical changes or if it was just something meant to quickly boost player progression so if someone could help me out a little bit on this one it would be really appreciated!
